Secondary IP on Default VLAN

I have an easy question...hopefully. I have been using an old router as our 'default gateway' for most of our equipment but we would like to move all routing back to my Extreme x450a. Some of the equipment has already been updated with the IP of the core switch and this works great.

My question is would it be possible to add the IP of the router (192.168.1.1) as a secondary IP on the Default VLAN of the x450a switch (192.168.1.10)?

Does this even make sense to do it this way?

Thanks,
ChrisW

Chris,

While it is entirely possible to add a secondary IP interface on Extreme. It's called Multinetting. I would not suggest it in your application. Multinetting stems from back in the day when we only had hubs and routers you could have more than one subnet over the same flat VLAN. ExtremeXOS switches also allow this, but there is a catch.

The ExtremeXOS switch will allows you to do this, but I do not believe that the primary and secondary VLAN interfaces can be in the same subnet as you are proposing here.

your best bet. Unconfigure the 192.168.1.10 from the VLAn, decommission the router, then change the switch VLAN to 192.168.1.1 and use that as the default gateway for everything. A much cleaner approach.

Thanks Fush,

That's what I found as well. I was hoping to find an easy answer but I should do it the correct way in the first place.

Thank again,
Chris
