I am running xp home on a dell P4. My primary drive was filling up so I bought a 80G Westen digital as a storage drive. It showed up on device manager and I put a volume on it and transferred data, so far so good. Now my primary drive (I think) is starting to make a slightly different noise, so I decide to unplug the secondary to see if thats what it is. Powered down, umplug power cord, leave other data cord in place. Same sound. Power down, plug back in, now disk isnt recognized. Power down, recheck connection, same result. What did I do/not do?

1. Swap power connectors from 1st drive to 2nd drive
2. Swap data connectors " " " .

In both instances see if drive is visible in BIOS, with Dell I think it's F12 or F2 to get to BIOS. Probably a loose/bad connector or cable (he says optimistically). Post back w/ results.

Tony,

I would have done this, but my secondary drive is not bootable. I also wasn't very comfortable doing this because I had apparently screwed up a simple disconnect/reconnect. Unfortunately, I have a lot of files that I need to work with in the next week, so I wasn't up for too much experimentation. I did power down again and recheck connections and noticed the jumper was not quite plugged in. So I reset that and now it is recognized. Apparently I jostled it when unplugging the drive. Learn something new everyday. Thanks for your advice.
