I need to run a second mail server to accept Emails if our main mail server is unavailable. Both need to run Sendmail. The main server is working. I want to accept mail on the new/second machine connected to another IP address and forward mail to the main machine when it becomes available. Does anyone know how to configure the second macine? Do I need to make any changes to the existing sendmail setup? I can and will add a second MX record to the DNS.

Adding another mail server to the MX record should do everything automatically when your primary server goes down. The only thing I'm not sure about is getting mail still on the second server when the primary comes back online. I would try forwarding or routing everything for your domain on the second server to the primary. This way it should stay on that server in the queue until the primary comes back online. There may be a better way but this should work.
