I recently installed a second hard drive as the master on the secondary IDE. The drive is recognized by the bios and when I run "dmesg | more" from a terminal this message appears:

hdc IC35L060AVER07-0, ATA DISK drive

However, /dev/hdc does not exist. I'm running mandrake 8.1, which is kernel 2.4.8-26 according to the login screen. Any ideas why the new hard drive is not being listed?

solved it by removing "hdc=ide-scsi" from the append line in lilo.conf . However, the newbie I am, I have no idea what this line was there for. I have no scsi devices. Is this line important?

If you had a CDRW drive in your system then you would see the reference to ide-scsi (Linux treats the CDRW as a SCSI device, even though it is an IDE device).

If you have moved the CDRW to a different device id, then you will need to modify the reference so that Linux will be able to use the device.

Hope this helps

okay, there was a cdrw at hdc and now it's on hdd, so I'll just change the line to "hdd=ide-scsi". Thanks for the help.
