I am deviating slightly here as Second Copy is not Sidekick but I have yet to solve the problem where I allocate drive D to copy Sidekick and it does not work because the external disk I use has been allocated G or H or I amongst the various plug-ins I have. Second Copy FAQ gives no clue - it has to be an external disk for me as a partition on the internal hard disk is not my idea of back-up.

Dear JimAlex,

Go to tools in the SecondCopy window and select
'change drive letter'
when you reconnect your laptop.

Hi James33
This change is useful but if I have to do it every time there is a mismatch it defeats the convenience of automatic back-up. I think the answer is in Device Manager where the external drive can be renamed and it works for all PCs and laptops with Windows without further change (?)- I need to be careful that all USB plug-ins have a designated drive. I would like Second Copy to agree with this but no response. One easy solution is to use a CD/DVD RW (internal) and this is also usable on all PCs/laptops. Internal drives-no problem, external drives, still checking!

The conclusion.
Device manager works but the danger is when you insert another CD DVD SD or USB disk Second Copy copies to the wrong disk.
The answer is to "Only copy to the volume named" and give all your external disks a different volume name. Second Copy offers this as an option.
Incidentally, DriveA is still reserved for the floppy disk but this too needs a unique volume name if somebody out there still has one (cough, like me).
