Lat night my 8 year old daughter typed "Brittany" into the address bar and low and behold, a whole of heap sites cam up?

HOw does this work? How is it determined?

The answer to your question really depends on what OS your are using and what Browser. If you are using a Windows OS and using IE, by default ( I think ) the search engine used when searching via the address bar is MSN. You can add other search engines if you want to. Also you can adjust what gets displayed in the results by going to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Searching fom the address bar and there are four or five options to choose from.

Again depending on what OS and browser your are using there are very good help features that walk you through searching from the address bar. Select Help from the start menu and then select Index ( if you are using IE). Next type in: searching from the address bar.
