I have a client who wants to put their stock catalog on-line - although they don't plan on selling the items online.

They currently have an in-house system which stores their stock - which can export the database to excel, if they need to send an updated stock list to a client.

At present this excel spreadsheet has been converted into an HTML document and sits on the page within an iframe.

However they would like people to be able to search this document - although they are not happy with telling people to use the browser ctrl-f functionality -

Is there another way around this?

Although Excel is a drag to work with - in terms of going forward anything else for the client would create a duplication of work for them.

That sounds bad.

Export in CSV, then display/search/sort/filter/paginate the data with a server-side script. Of course, we have no information about what can be accessed/executed on their server, so this may or may not work for them.

As a quick and dirty solution, you could try some client-side solutions in JavaScript, for example Table Sorting, Filtering, Etc by Matt Kruse. ( See the Examples, there is a search-like filtering too. ) Of course, if the table is huge, better forget the client-side solutions.

Feherke.
