Searching for data in an extent

I am currently trying to find out which extent of a variable contains the information that I am looking for. The variable has 8 extents and I want to cycle through each extent and compare it to the data I am looking for. I am pretty sure that I could do it using the index function but am at a loss to how to set it up. Thank you in advance
