Searching for a word

There is a word which describes a state of mind, a psychological condition of aloneness, isolation, aloofness. I can't remember it. The last time I encountered the word, it was in the context of early settlers of the U.S. Great Plains.

I think the word starts with an "a". Does anyone know this word?

Cold it be "anomie"? I found this definition:

anomie...refers to the psychological condition...of rootlessness, futility, anxiety, and amorality

So is there a related word? If anomie is the depression and anxiety caused by isolation and lack of a social network, what would the word be for the elation sometimes felt in the same circumstances?
