Searching for a good host

I've just been asked to set up a pretty elaborate site for my church. They want members to be able to get online and chat with each other, upload photo albums, take surveys, search a database for info on other members, etc.
While I have some experience in maintaining websites, this is a lot more ambitious than anything I've done in the past and I expect to need a lot of hand-holding by whoever we decide to select to host it.
Does anyone have a suggestion on a hosting outfit that has a really good (and patient) tech support staff?

I have had good luck with hostmatters.com. Not only do they have preinstalled scripts for most of the elements that you want, they have an online forum and a great tech support team.

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

It might be useful for you to get hold of a a content management systems like PHPNuke (phpnuke.org) or some forum software like PHPBB ( Both of these need php and a database like mysql installed on the server. I've played with both and they are fairly easy to set up and have lively communities around to help support them.

I agree, phpNuke is awesome, and to boot, hostmatters has it set up to self install, so that makes the setup step that much easier for a novice.

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

I have nothing but good things to say about the guys at
Their helpdesk and support is wonderful... very responsive and very helpful.

They are primarily a PHP/mySQL shop with full ColdFusion support. They have very good rates, and a very simple to use Admin control panel/web page.

Good luck on your search!

algraff, i've been verrrrrrrryyyyyyy satistfied with FrontServe ( All my site i've done for my clients have FrintServe as their hosting company. I even recomended FS to some of my friends.

Take a look at the site, plus its very affordable.

Hey,

You need the person who hosts for you to also help create the site? I'm pretty hectic right now trying to complete all 15 of my own sites right now (only 5 are done, and even those aren't all completely finished), but I just bought (started renting) a really nice server, and I can give you free hosting for your church site. Well...assuming....how much storage space and download will you need? I *think* I can give you free hosting ;-)...the server can certainly support it, I just need to know how much I'd have to set aside from my other stuff...It has support for pretty much everything you could ever need for a website. It's a 15,000 MBIT connection, so I doubt you'd ever have any speed problems ;-).

Contact me at ristmo@ristmo.com if you're interested or chat on MSN Messenger with rick@rick-morgan.com.

God bless!

Rick

Hmm...So what does that mean? ;-). It's split between the total of number of servers the company rents out? They host 20,000 servers (!!! first time I noticed that), so that means that if they were all serving data simultaneously, my server would get 3/4 of a MBIT? And a T1 line's 1.5MBIT? So I really only get about 1/2 a T1 line? :-/ If my reasoning's right, I guess I don't really get that much, after all ;-)...but then, they probably rarely if ever have a full load, right? Meaning that if I needed more than that, it's available? Besides...a T1 can host quite a few sites and still have high speed, can't it? I guess it's not quite is good as I thought, but it should still seem more than adequate for this as well as numerous other sites...

Am I making sense?

Rick

Hi mate,

Rough guess, are you with 1&1? Sounds like their setup.

Basically, you are correct in what you have said, but there will never be a time that all the servers are hitting full capacity, and you never want it to either.

Assuming it's a Windows server, login and look at the network connection, that will tell you the uplink speed. Most likely you will have an uplink of about 10MBit.

How much transfer can you use per month without being charged extra?

Rick,

Assuming you are using 1&1, and have 500GB monthly allowance, take the following into account:

On a 10mbit line you can transmit up to 10mbits of data per second (a maximum of 1.25megabytes per second). If you run constantly at 10mbps for the full month, you can consume up to 3,200gb of traffic a month.

Now, take into account that a 100Mbit connection is 10 times that, you could transfer 32,000GB a month.

From an allowance of 500GB, you are looking at a not so small fortune to cover that.

So now, aren't you slightly glad that you don't have a 15,000Mbit connection? [wink]

Hope this helps

Wullie

I've read these responses with some interest. Now for my question....
I resell web site hosting and each site cost me about $10.00 per site per month. Someone told me that I should be able to get a "dedicated server" for $100.00 to 150.00 per month.
Anyone have any good ideas where to find a good one?
Thanks,
Dave

Just to follow up on my original post, I finally decided to go with 1and1. It was a toss-up between them and webmasters.com and 1and1 won the toss.

As far as tech support goes, I haven't been too impressed with their response time to my e-mails. [neutral] They advertise 24/7 support. I'm not sure what the 7 means, but I've found out that the 24 means a minimum of 24 hours before they reply. But they do provide just about everything you would ever need.

If anybody is looking for a SUPER CHEAP host, I've heard good stuff about siteflip.com.

BTW, The new site I'm setting up on 1and1 is
