Some times when I start up IE it shows a search window on the left hand side. Usually I right click it and close it. Other times it will start loading a page with search items and I have to wait until it's loaded to close the window. During that time the only way I can get back to IE is to hit the Windows button on the keyboard to bring up my task bar. Is there any way of turning the search item off.
Thanks to all in advance

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT.

Search Assistant will try to connect to:
This is done to check for updates to its features, tips, wording and etc. Denying access through a firewall can cause its own set of problems, usually a "A file that is required........." error message.

1. You can stop the internet access by changing the search behavior to Classic Search.

2. Or, you can disable the search assistant in the Registry:

For Search in Windows Explorer, Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Cabinet State

For Search in Internet Explorer, Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main.

For either/both:
Right click in the right pane and select New, String value and name the value: Use Search Asst
Double click the new value and enter "no", without the quotes.
