I just installed the Microsoft Portal on a 2003 Server computer and now I'm getting a lot of errors in the event logs and a runtime error every few minutes.
All of the errors are concerning the Microsoft SharepointPS search service.
The runtime errors will continue to popup unless I disable this service.
The Event ID in the logs is 502 and even with the service disabled that same event will pop up, but it will have the heading Microsoft Sharepoint Administration Service.

Should I just uninstall the portal and try a fresh install?
I can't disable every service just to make the errors vanish, but is there a way around this?

okay, apparently this can be caused if you are using a proxy or if you did the computer install using a RIS image.
In any case, I went to the internet options > connections tab > LAN settings > "use proxy server..." > and then ticked the "bypass proxy server..."

Then I did a repair of the portal installation and the problem went away
