The Windows 7 Search seems to confine itself to fining Files

one of the most useful features of Previous searches was the ability to find a file Cantaing certain text

e.g Searc all *.txt File containg "Mums Phone Number" etc

Is there such a Search in Windows 7 ..... and if so where the *F$#$% can I find it ?

Thanks

Peter Wallace

For machine wide searching you might have to look at extending your Indexing Options to cover all the folders otherwise searching may be slow.

You can also look at setting Search Options, Control Panel/ Folder Options/ View/ Search.

This is from Windows 7 Help and Support.

"If you can't find a file, you can expand your search to include different locations. For example, if you're searching for a file in the Documents library, but you're not sure where the file is stored, you can search across all of your libraries or your entire computer. Here's how:

Click the Start button , and then click Documents.

In the search box at the top of the open window, start typing.

Scroll to the bottom of the list of search results. Under Search again in, do one of the following:

Click Libraries to search across every library.

Click Computer to search across your entire computer. (This way you can search for files that aren't indexed, such as system or program files, but remember that the search will be slower.)

Click Custom to search specific locations.

Click Internet to search online using your default web browser and your default search provider."

This might or might be useful.

Thanks Linney

But that help is for finding FILES ... by Name ... NOT find a File CONTAINING a certain Phrase

I have been adviced that a Utility Called SearchmyFiles was available ... I have downloaded this and it Does what I want very well

Quotes
"tropical island"
Find files that contain the exact phrase "tropical island."

When I search for text I just include it in quotes via the Search Box.

I did mention SearchMyFiles too, I use it all the time as I don't fully trust the Windows Search, but in folders I search regularly for text phrases the Windows Search is pretty good.

>Searc all *.txt File containg "Mums Phone Number" etc

One way (as per linney's advice regarding the built-in search)
"Mums Phone Number" AND type:.txt

Google desktop search is still available:

Google Desktop automatically indexes and allows you to search the full text over the following types of items on your computer:

Outlook Email Netscape Mail/Thunderbird
Outlook Express Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape
Word PDF
Excel Music
PowerPoint Images
Internet Explorer Video
MSN Instant Messenger Zip
AOL Instant Messenger Text and others
Google Talk Even more with indexing-plug-ins
