Hi,

I am totaly new to search engines. Can someone tell me of any article that talks about search engines, how to submit, how to optimize, all they do's and don'ts and all the tips and tricks. Can i do a fairly decent job with out paying or do I need pay to the engines?

In short I want to be search engine expert, please tell me about article or book if you know...

thanks

Unless you are in a very competitive arena (Mortgages, Estate Agent (Real Estate), Insurance or the Adult Market) PFI (Pay For Inclusion) of PPC (Pay Per Click) would only be necessary should you need quick results and/or instant sales. Yes you can do an amazing job without paying provided you take the time to learn [yoda] to do a good job and avoid the "dark side" [vader2]
There is masses of information out there on SEO, unfortunately most of it is a/ Total Crap. b/ Misinformed drivel. c/ People keeping the myths alive. d/ Scammers out to prey on the unwary.

some quick tips
You don't submit to SEs you submit to directories. the SEs will find you from a link
Your page title is the most important aspect for on page optimization
Don't even care about Google PR (PageRank) it's really not THAT important.
create yourself a signature with your URL in it and there's some ready made backlinks every time you make a forum post. forums on the same topic as your site are a good source of qualified traffic. don't go finding forums just to post at though, that's just annoying to the forum owner/users and spamming.

The SE world is a very quick moving race if you try to keep up with the latest and greatest theory about what the SEs like, don't worry about it. Do what's best for your visitors and you'll find it's right for the SEs as well

Sources of GOOD information:
Here of course. There is a lot of good information here and a few myths are explained and exploded. Though it's a little quiet.
excellent free info and even more if you pay to be a member.
articles and links to many of the better sites around.
Jill Whalens forum, great for newbies and experts alike, bit more informal than most forums.
Doug Heils forum, huge amounts of info, often very technical and specific and sometimes a little daunting for the newbie.

there are lots more, some good, some not so, but these should give you a great start.

Chris.

Indifference will be the downfall of mankind, but who cares?

Chris thanks alot for your reply, I have few questions I will ask you later after doing little reading..

This is so true.

Always remember that you are building a site for people, not for Search Engines. If you concentrate on making a genuinely useful website then you should find that your site does well.
