Hi - I have a chart that I have been working on for the last couple of months. I'd like to post it on the forum and get regular feedback to help maintain it and make it a real good resource for people to use as a quick search engine reference quide.

Right now it is at:

I don't know if it is possible to list the chart here or what, but I really feel like a nice chart could be very beneficial.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks, Beth beth@integratedresourcemgmt.com

Looks like a useful page, however whats your criteria for establishing a search engine as major? I would think Yahoo and Dog Pile would rate, but I've never heard of Real Names. "The surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that it has never tried to contact us"

I got the information related to Major Search Engine from my membership with Search Engine Watch and an old document that I refer to.

Any ideas, updates, etc. are greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Beth beth@integratedresourcemgmt.com

Hi all,

I totally agree with Bentley22 that Dogpile and Yahoo are up there with the top engines..

What does the #2 mean on the listing with Yahoo?

BTW. Realnames are the engine that power the keywords that when typed into your address bar in IE (as long as you use MSN) then they take you directly to the site that bought the keyword. Type "coke" and you are taken to the Coca-Cola website, "disney" takes you to the disney website and so on..

Depending on the keyword package bought then they also return top of MSN for a search of that word. Each keyword only applies to the country that it was purchased for though and generic terms cannot be purchased.

Hope this helps Wullie

Hi There: The Rating of #2 for Yahoo is based on popularity Rating from Nielsen/NetRatings Internet Audience Measurement Service. They rate the Top 25 Web Properties. They base their ratings on the following:

"The reported Internet usage estimates are based on a sample of households that have access to the Internet and use the following platforms: Windows 95/98/NT, and MacOS 8 or higher."

"The Nielsen//NetRatings Internet universe is defined as all members (2 years of age or older) of U.S. households which currently have access to the Internet."

Hi - A Major Search Engine is one that is commercially backed.

Yahoo is commercially backed, but categorized as a Directory. It would be classifed as a Major Directory, rather than a Search Engine.
