Hi, I'm working on a new website and need to know the best way to submit it to the search engines when I'm finished. The site will be showing and selling art work, like paintings, prints, etc.
OK. So I'm assuming that Google, et al. eventually finds me this way? What are submission software programs about? Just another scam, or useful? Do you have any idea how long it takes for the search engines to pick up a new site that's been submitted to directories? Are any particular directories better?
In google you can also create what are known as ADword campaings, where you can specify certain keywords that when searched for, will trigger yur site. either as a search result or as an Ad to the left of the results. And they work practically immediately.
Hope this helps

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.
If you have current sites that get traffic or are crawled by Google just link to your new site for a short time or longer if it seems appropriate.
Also put a "signature" link in your profile here and link to it from post here at Tek-Tips. Its a good way for them to be found and gain a few links. But find relevant sites/directories and try to get listed too.
Most submission program mainly manage to ensure that you will get spam email for the rest of your online life.
Yahoo and MSN will pick up the site fairly quickly from many directories, Google on the other hand now has the Aging Delay to contend with for new sites.
Thanks for all the responses. The person I'm working with on this new site is the impatient type. So, I'm wondering about the ADwords. About how much does this cost?
Thanks,
Kundrol
Adwords: Depends on the topic. Some are .05 per click to over $5.00 in very competitive areas. Many good terms are less than a $1.00 sometimes you just have to be creative on the words your bidding on. May not be able to afford the higher cost
"main terms" but still get traffic from less competitive terms.
With some care and well written/optimized ads it is a great way to start out a site with traffic. It just costs a bit more in the beginning to get good ad placement. Fine tune your ads, get more clicks and cost usually goes down per click.
