search db fields for values but output like only once

I have a DB table with placenames in a row. I want to be able to output the total list of placenames into a dropdown.

How do I populate this with only displaying each different one once

i.e. in the table

place 1
place 2
place 3
place 2
place 2
place 3


output would only show

place 1
place 2
place 3

I think you mean placename in a column not a row.

I think this is an SQL question.

I think you want DISTINCT.

select distinct placename
from yourtable
