Search Database using API

Hi I'm really stuck with this one so any help would be greatly appreciated. What I'm trying to do is search through a database in a specific field like is done with autocomplete in windows. I want to see possible matches as I type in the string. I'm using SQL through a Data Environment if that makes things any easier. Aslo I saw people mentioning API in previous threads, anyone know the code I need?

For search in a database you dont have need a Api ;-)
