Search component causing "service not running" message

Hi,
I just added a search component to my web and I have FPSE 2002 installed. I first started to get an error saying that the FPSE needed to be installed. After looking around on the internet for help I found sharepoint administration where I added my website as a subweb to my WinXP Pro server (it was already in the

http://wwwroot

directory but apparently not seen as a subweb). Still no help so I decided to "recalculate the web" and now when I try to use the search feature, I get "Service not running." I went to the Computer Management area and did a server extensions check and all was fine. I did a restart on IIS. I'm not getting errors in my event log. I really don't know much about IIS and sharepoint. Did I do something wrong? Anyone have any ideas?

I believe that you have to have the Index server installed and running. Maybe check this article I found on MS site and see if this helps get your search working on your local machine:
