Staff in our company are disappointed by the inconsistencies in document numbering, ie - Quotes, Packing slips, orders, invoices, etc. may not have the same number. The master number appears to be consistent across these documents though. Is there a way to search for all documents in the system by master number?

Are you referring to the Trx Source when you say Master Number? You can use Smartlist and look for a consistent Trx Source (also can use Batch Source).

The document types each have their own numbering sequence, so you're right they will never be consistent, but they don't need to be. When you transfer an order to an invoice, if you want the original order number to appear on the invoice, you can probably modify the invoice to show it. It is still available to cross reference in the system however.

Thanks!

Actually, we found the spot which allows us to track the master numbers, and produce all the documents related to it. Just took a lot of searching.

According to our last ISO audit, we didn't appear to have any system for easy tracking of documents related to a specific order, etc. This master number was discovered following this, and I just had to ensure that it could be used to obtain all the documents correctly.

inquiry>sales>sales document inquiry

in this screen you can filter by master number which is assigned and follows any transfered document from start to finish.

you can also use smartlist for this or do like I did, create a crystal report to do it ;)

and they wonder why they call it Great Pains!

watch out on the master number - it happened here and a place across town where all of a sudden the master number had to be turned off because of a problem with the GP trigger (v 8.0) wanting to start at 0 and look for the next available one (we were at 41753 at this point).

Microsoft had me turn the option for MasterNumber off, but now we are operating without masternumbers as MS wants 5 hours of consulting to write the code to put in the master numbers for all of those records that were out there with the option off... ok - so I could write it myself, but it is the principal of the thing.
