Seagate Travan 40 (STT3401) and Windows 98

I have a Travan 40 Atapi IDE drive that sporadically disappears from the device list in Windows 98se. The only way to get it back is to reboot several times and then it will work okay for a while. I have updated the drivers, firmware etc...Runs on it's own channel set to secondary master. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
