seagate tape backup fails

This on a dell 1300. Nt backup just hangs, seagate diagnostics give an error (I'm not in front of the machine and I can't remember exactly, but it sounded like an error connecting to the drive). I rang seagate, who were very unhelpful but said that the drive was just fine. Dell got me to reset the bios and change the transfer rate. This made no difference and they said the drive was bust.
Can I tell whether the problem lies in the board, or the drive or something else without forking out a few hundred quid for a new drive.

Had something similar and it was the cable between drive a nd board, cheap enough to try anyway
