Enough said, I suppose.

I'm just wondering who has what opinions about which manufacturers. I've used all of them; I've had problems with all of them and success with all of them. Seagate claims to have the quietest drives on the market with the Barracudas. They all purport to have a certain "angle" that differentiates them from the competition. I'm interested in optioninos regarding 7200 RPM EIDE drives only, not SCSI. Dallas S. Kelsey, III

Hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmm.... Hard to say. I think that I would go Seagate, personally. Perhaps the best thing that I can say about them, is that I don't have a Seagate horror story (although I've heard some....)

As for Maxtor--I hate to actually admit this, but since the merge with Quantum, I have had pretty good luck with them. Is it due to changes that they have made, or is it just dumb luck? Probably the latter, but I just can't argue with a product that works for me.... And consider that this is coming from a rabid anti-Maxtor tech. Still, I've had enough issues with them before, I am gunshy.

I know that I would NOT use Western Digitals unless I become desperate. I, too, have had failures with all manufacturers, but it seems that lately too many WDs die on me. In addition, when I return a drive for RMA, WD is the only company (out of about 5) that consistantly returns a refurb drive that dies within 6 months (most don't make it that long). The other brands tend to send a new drive, or a refurb that lasts me well over a year. It is to the point that I don't alwaus send the WD drives back for RMA. When you consider shipping costs, time spent, it is not worth it when you figure that you're going to get a bum drive back anyway!!

Of course, this is only based on my experience, so take the information with a grain of salt!! Mudskipper

Quick! Run out and find me a four year-old child: I can't make heads nor tails out of this!"

Personal choice is Maxtor. All I have used for many many years and have never had one go bad. The Seagates are good also, and are the quietest I have seen. I do not think you can go wrong with any of these choice. Personally I would go Maxtor then Seagate then Western. Seen and heard alot of horror stories with weastern however.

Something very reassuring about a drive you carn't hear! thats why I like the seagate Barracuda's some of the others, I am sitting infront of a new 120gig Diamond Max plus 9 as we speak! sound like grinding coggs in a gearbox! most uninspiring! goes well though!
But the 2X 40gig Barracuda's IV's in my PC are like silk!

let me put it this way, me and a roommate both got WD's about 3 months ago, both failed within 48 hours, we both got replacements, mine failed within a week, I got a refund and purchased a similar Seagate, it like comparing night to day -- one works, the other DOESNT!! [soapbox]

To add to the accumulating file.....
I have used a pair of maxtors (now 2 years old) without a hitch.
Recently bought a Western Digital which ran for one week then suffered a massive failure - of the electronic variety, for which, incidentally, they expected me to pay the return postage to the USA......maybe all manuacturers have this policy, but it didn't help with my impression of them.
But only you can decide which way to go. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.
