Hi
Has anyone any experience of Seagates Barracuda 250GB drive 7200.8? I just recieved one from Ebuyer here in the UK. The electrostatic bag the drive arrived in has a 'Western Digital' logo on it, and was already open! WD and Seagate aren't related are they?
Also it arrived with no cover over the electronics; ie I can see all the PCB, IC's etc. Is this normal for this drive?
Looks like I've been sold a dodgy return, but would appreciate knowing wether the lack of a cover is normal before I contact Ebuyer.
Thanks.

Lewishamphil,

The PCB is normally in the open. It is the actual HD platter(s) and associated mechanisms that are sealed and for practial and warranty purposes must remain sealed.

Seagate & WD are not related. No call on the bag mix up.

Re-furbished/rebuilt drive generally are identified as such.

Thanks guys
I'll insist that this is replaced with a 'factory sealed'item.

Firstly the last of the Barracuda's to have a sealed base was the version V, after this drive came the Barracuda 7200.7 which had the open PCB (which incidently is fairly typical design and follows Maxtor/WD/Hitachi etc in being exposed like this)
So the latest 7200.8's are open

Ebuyer may appear to be a bit naughty for shipping an opened OEM drive but I wouldn't get too stressed about this, many dealers (including ourselves) have a policy of opening and marking all products before shipping so in the event of any returns they know that the product was supplied by them.
Besides, is the drive dated? YES? and well in warranty typically manufactured 3 months prior to supply date? so if a drive fails it is RMA'd to the manufacturer not the supplier.
If now on reflection you think I might be correct? then
install the drive, if it loads the O/S without problems and without noises it's fine.
