I bought this drive to put in my new dell (quad processor,4gb ram, vista) and the system drive works fine and has very fast file copy. howver copying files to the seagate is extremely slow and retrieving files is slow as well. The drive makes a constant clicking noise when being accessed, sounds like a piston chugging along. I ran seagate smartools on the drive and it said the drive was working fine.

is there a difference between sata1 and sata2 cables? are can both drives use the same type of cable?

any suggestions? I'm ready to return the drive for a refund. and I just found out newegg.com charges a 15% restocking fee. tigerdirect doesn't seem to charge that for returns so i may shop with them exclusively from now on

sata1&2 - same connector. It does sound like that drive is dying, despite what the diagnostic says.

You can RMA it for a replacement as DOA. If they still intend on charging you shipping costs, call their support line and complain, they will usually credit it.

Your drive was probably the victim of harsh shipping.

finally today, vista started complaining about the drive, stating that there was a problem and I should backup my data immediately.

I guess I have 2 options now, either return to newegg or to seagate. It looks like newegg won't do an advanced replacement and i believe seagate will. I would like to get my data off before shipping it back.

thanks for the responses.

Most manufacturers will cross-ship as long as you give them a credit card number. They are usually easier to deal with than the seller.

This is a case in point, to always pay attention to how refunds/exchanges are handled BEFORE you buy. Many sellers, like Amazon.com, include return shipping labels with the items just for cases like this. If the difference in the selling price is small, choose the place with better return options.

Newegg's laptop policy is ridiculously skewed in their favor, I guess to prevent people from buying a laptop and returning it for any reason other than DOA. I bought a laptop from them, knowing full well about the policy. The box had been bounced, dropped, kicked and even looked like it had tire marks on it!

The laptop failed to boot, so I immediately called to tell them about the shipping damage. Since the laptop was now out-of-stock, they had to give me a credit, but I had to buy a more expensive laptop and they still wanted to charge me shipping...both ways for the DOA laptop.

I called again and politely mentioned that I should not be punished for their poor packing and UPS' bad handling, they agreed and refunded the shipping fees. Sometimes it takes a couple of calls to get the "right" agent on the line.

As for the data, DBAN: will do the trick (just BE SURE you have selected the right drive!) as will Seagate's SeaTools Zero Fill utility:
