SDLT or LTO

What is more wise to purchase SDLT or LTO ? ( not a capacity issue )

From what i hear SDLT is sensitive to start and stop processes when data throughput is not high enough, causing the life cycle of a SDLT drive to shorten dramatically ?

Supposed hardware is HP
