I have formatted a 128mb SD card in Windows XP, now I cannot format it in the camera (Pentax Optio 550). The camera says that it is unformatted and is unable to reformat.

Is there any way to get the card back to a state that the camera recognises?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I've found that XP doesn't recognize some Win 98 or Win95 floppy disks. Maybe if you reformated the SD card on a Win98 system you would be OK.

I think micker377 has it right, I take it the XP machine is running NTFS file format? so possibly if you connect your card reader to a windows 98 machine (Fat 32) then reformat the card, hopefully it will resolve your problem.

Thank you both for your suggestions.

Since I posted this problem I have found out that for digital cameras there is a formatting standard for SD cards for use in the camera. If the SD card is formatted in Windows it will work as removable disk but the card will not contain hidden files required by the camera for formatting.

I have found an SD card formatting programme on the Panasonic site at this address.
