I'm having problem with our HP-C1537A L111 on sco-unix 5.0.4

i wanted to know how to check the presence of this device, check its driver, check if it conflict with other SCSI controller and re-nitialize it.

also, how am i able to check if it's spitting an error, aside from /usr/adm/messages & constant email to root?

thanks.

Did this drive stop working, or are you trying to install it?

Presence will show in /usr/adm/messages 1/2 page from the bottom of the last message regarding boot.
Also , you might want to look in man tape. Ed Fair

apeasecpc,

yes! i stopped working (alignment problem) and it was pulled out of the system and was tested OK with windows. afterwards it was put backed in. but, until now - i am experiencing same old stuff while trying to use this device.

do i really have to re-configure it within the system or a "RE-BOOT" will do the trick?

REboot. The driver is in place.
My last test before going back live is a tar of the /etc/default directory. Short enough to not take too long and I know what should show on the screen when I read it back out. Ed Fair

I am assuming you already rebooted the system because you shut it down to remove the drive for testing and again to put it back in the system (if you didn't shut down you should have, tape drives don't hotswap very well)?

How did you test the drive in windows?

Does the drive not function at all, or are you able to get a partial backup before it breaks?

apeasecpc,

i was able to backup completely in windows environment.

seems to me, it can't write on the tape drive. should i check or re-install the driver of this particular tape drive?

i got this:

# dmesg

Sep 13 09:40
...
cyls=1957 hds=255 secs=63 fts=sdb
%Stp-0 - - - Vendor=HP Product=C1537A
NOTICE: Stp: SCSI tape 0 device 46/8 offline

and this is the current config:

The current tape configuration is:
Unit Description
0 DAT drive (Compressing and non-Compressing)

Do you see the device listed for the controller when you boot up?

In my experience, UNIX doesn't just quit working for no reason. You've already confirmed that the drive is ok. Do you have any other devices attached to this scsi controller? I am now thinking that the controller may have gone bad.
