History - Installed RH 7.2 on a Compaq 2U with RAID controller and hot plug drive bays, no tape drive at install time. Received hotplug AIT SCSI tape afterwards, plugged it in, tape drive quite happy.

Problem: To access it! /dev/st0 /dev/nst0 etc does not work. RAID controller stuff seems to exist in /dev/cciss/ instead, hundreds of them. There is no /dev/tape link to help me out.

So how now? Does RH have something similar like Mandrake's "HardDrake" which will detect and configure it for me? (Dunno if HardDrake will do it either)

Hi,

Kudzu is supposed to do that. It runs at boot time but you can also run it anytime with '/usr/sbin/kudzu' . If it finds anything new a graphical screen should pop up. You can also see what it finds by appending the -p flag, i.e. '/usr/sbin/kudzu -p' .

Regards

Of course if you don't have support built into your kernel, you're not going to find it anyway.
