is it relatively straightforward to take an internal scsi device and make it into an external one?
I've rescued a 540mb IBM drive from an old apple and it's exactly what my sampler needs to back up to. It has to be an external device so my pc can make an image of the drive (the latest software for the sampler precludes having it and the pc on the scsi chain)as a cd copy. Anything bigger than a cdr and the drive may fragment and the image will be useless.

any help or even just mentions of a helpful book or site or anything would be luvverly.

SCSI device is SCSI device. At hardware and OS level internal and external can't be identified. It is a matter of putting it in a box with proper ID and termination.

Hi,

You should be able to find enclosures that will let you plug disks in and connect to other devices - I would search the websites of your local computer suppliers and stores to see what they have to offer.

is there a book available showing how to do this? or is it possible/easier just to buy an empty box with a power supply,ID and termination maybe? I'm sure it's also possible to mount the drive inside the sampler, but as I said, both it and the pc cannot be on the chain at the same time.

thanks btw.

Buy an external SCSI hard drive box and a terminator. The ID on the boxes is normally set by a switch that connects to the ID jumper block. Separate terminators seem to be better than the internal ones on the drives, and active ones are generally better than the static ones.

I use to use old XT PC cases a little big but you could get 2 to 4 drives in one case and I had a lot of the junk XT case around. What type of external SCSI jack do you have on the computer. with that old drive you will likely need SCSI1 or SCSI2
