Hi,

My Novell 5.1 is on a HP LC2000 server. I have a tape drive (HP) on the internal SCSI card. It worked for the last 2 years, but now, the server is very slow, I saw Arcserve didn't work anymore. PFC send me an error (E21111 no backup device found on host adapter [board0]).
A quick search and I saw the [board 0] is now the HP megaraid card and the internal SCSI card is not detected anymore.

If I unload the driver and Arcserve, the server runs fine.

The configuration seems ok, as far as I can see.

Thanks for all informations you could give me. My server is not backed up since a week now...

Check the BIOS settings and make sure the motherboard SCSI controller is still enabled. If cosmic rays or random event disabled it, try re-enabling it. Also check condition of cable from motherboard SCSI to tape drive. Fred Wagner

To add to Fred's advice;

Also check to ensure the driver is actually loading. The driver should be loaded in the STARTUP.NCF file in your DOS partition. Check to ensure the file is there, if it isn't, there's your problem, if it is, then load it at comand line and see what happens.

More than likely if the driver load statement is in the STARTUP.NCF file you either have an out dated driver that doesn't work right with current public veriables, or you have a newer driver that can not find needed public veriables, or you do not have the correct slot specified.

You may have also switched the load order so the RAID driver loads before the SCSI driver, when before the SCSI driver loaded before the RAID driver. The board numbering in netware has no refelction on hardware. The number comes from the order the divers are loaded. Brent Schmidt CNE,Network + [atom]

The card is ok. I checked the bios already. This server was working since 2 years. The driver is not loaded but it's in the startup file. I tried to launch it from the console and an error message telling me there is no matching hardware appear.

I use the SYMHINW.ham driver. I will try the one found in the HP drivers CDRom

some steps for fixing the backup problem.
1. do you have installed novell serice packs
2. when you boot the server can you see that the SCSI
Symbois Controller find the hp-tapedrive
3. if the controller find the device drive, start the
novell os with the option "server -na -nl"
4. look on the server console for the loading modules
you can do it by: "m sym*" and "m scsi*" you must see
the modules symhinw.ham and *.cdm *.ddi also scsi2tp
for arcs 6.6x don't load nwtape arcs. is using his own
tape driver!! If the modules not loaded try the modules
sym8xxnw.* modules. You find they in C:\nwserver\drivers.
5. do a "scan for new devices" at the console to see the
tape devices is load.
6. if all seems is fine run autoexec.ncf

If you have installed novells new ServicePacks you have to
install the latest patches for arcserve.

have a nice day
