scsi hard drives won't complete mirror

I've got two SCSI hard drives on an adaptec 29320 controller, IBM Netvista PC. SCSI utilities on boot up sees both hard drives, but I can't get it to complete the RAID 1 mirror. It gets about 40% through, then just stops. Both hard drives are good, and the controller is good, and I know that these are all compatible because I've done the exact same setup successfully on another Compaq PC. Why won't it work on this one?
