I am operating SCO OpenServer 5.0.4

Upon boot-up, I am getting this message:

NOTICE: Sdsk : MODESENSE writing SCSI disk 2 dev 1/143
(ha=0 id=3 lun=0) block=0

I ran a FULL filesystem check and it appeared clean, but I still get this during boot. I am able to read/write to the disk just fine and I see no info on SCO's white pages to suggest what "MODESENSE" even is.

Has anyone run across this before? If so, if you can explain exactly what this means, I would appreciate it.

Thanks

are there any error messages in syslog? Mike

Email welcome if you're in a hurry or something -- but post in tek-tips as well please, and I will post my reply here as well.

Hi Scooter,
May be bad cable, bad pin, loose connection any number of thing could be wrong. As Mike says check syslog

The only problems I was getting in syslog file was
(in addition to the above message that appears in syslog during startup)

NOTICE: Sdsk : Unrecoverable error writing SCSI disk 2
dev 1/143 (ha=0 id=3 lun=0) block='block number'

that is what gave me the indication I had a problem in the first place. In looking at the syslog file from over the weekend, there have not been any more errors as stated
above (write errors), so, I'm not sure if the "fsck" I ran fixed it.

I was just wondering if anyone was familiar with the MODESENSE error indicated in my initial question. I have never seen that before.

Thanks guys for your input....I ran a full backup on that disk, so, for now, I'm going to assume it's okay after the file system check, but, I'll continue to monitor it.

Hi Scott,
Most of the time it fsck will fix it unless if it is physicall disk error then you will have to replace disk. If this error shows up again you better replace disk.
