This drive failed overnight so I wasn't present to hear any noise. It was not making noise the day before failure. The data is important but not critical. I'm looking for ideas other than eight zillion $$ to a data recovery firm.

Thanks.

Possibly replace the card from an identical drive. Since it wasn't a startup failure it sounds like a motor or motor control problem.

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

A trick I have heard of is to put it in a sealed plastic bag IN THE FREEZER!!!
Supposedly the drive will work for 10 minutes, then you can freeze it again.
Never tried it.
