I have a small NT4 network with 3 servers on one Domain; the PDC is a file Server (all the folders and documents are stored here), the BDC is an application server (finance), and the PROXY server is running Exchange 5.5. I have added 2 additional SCSI drives (18.4G each)in addition to the single drive on the PDC...the single drive has only 150 M of drive space free. What is the best way to migrate the files on the PDC to the new drives, so that I can then consider upgrading to win2000 server? Also the PROXY server has a new added drive (same deal as the PDC)and is very low on space also.
Directory Replication has not been done as far as I can tell. Can I move the C and D share on the PDC to drive F(blank 18.4G one) and then change the SCSI address to make the server boot from drive F (which will contain C$,D$ and...I think can be renamed....) Any guidance appreciated. Thanks.

Err, you can't simply "move" all files from C: and D: to F:, and be able to boot off the F:.

Firstly, what you need to do is get something like scopy.exe from the resource kit, so you can copy files across drives, and retain NTFS permisisons. ( explains how to use scopy.exe).

The next thing you need to do is isolate the files that users are storing on the server. These can be copied/moved onto the new disks without problems - just make sure you recreate the shares once you have moved them.

Stuff in Program Files will have to be uninstalled then reinstalled onto the new disk, if you have need to move them.

To move the NT installation, you'd basically have to reinstall.

With the Proxy Server, you may want to consider moving your mailboxes onto the new disk. I am not familiar with Exchange, though I'm sure there would be a way to do it. You could also move your proxy chache onto the new disk, leaving the system disk for system and program files only.

Hope that helps. [auto] MCSE NT4/W2K
