My knowledge of SCSI is very thin, I'm afraid.

Should a SCSI U, W or UW adapter be able support earlier SCSI devices? I intend to purchase an Adaptec SCSI adapter to connect an Epson Filmscan 200 (an Adaptec 2903 is supplied by Epson) to my PC but also want to be able to add SCSI HDDs, among other things.

Can I expect to be able to do this?

I will probably continue to boot from an IDE device.

Do 68 to 50 pin SCSI cable adapters exist?

In the SCSI world, pretty much 99.99% that it will work. I have hard drives build in 1992 running on my 29160 series Adaptec.

Two good places to look
and each have a section explaining SCSI, advantages and what not.

Good luck.
