I have a SCSI-2 Yamaha 8x4x24 CDRW connected to a Tekram DC-390 PCI SCSI-2 card. Everything has been working fine for probably about 2 years with this combo.. but tonight something went haywire.

When the computer starts up, the SCSI card does its usual thing of scanning the IDs looking for a device. Except this time, it stops on ID5 (which is where the burner is) and waits for about 2 minutes until it finally gives up and moves on. During this time the burner will flash the ON & Read lights orange and green just like it normally does during this scanning except now it just does it over and over until the scsi card stops scanning ID5.

there's nothing else attached to the SCSI card besides the burner..nor do I have anything to attach to it.

I guess what I need to know is what is at fault here? The drive, the card, or the scsi cable?

The easiest check is to simply refasten all the connections attached to the CDRW.
If this doesn't help, the problem is most likely the cable or drive itself (as you've mentioned).
First, replace the cable for a known good one and then its just a matter of troubleshooting the CDRW.
If those do not help, try switching PCI slots with the card.
My best guess is it's a loose connection or a bad cable.
Either way, you have some troubleshooting ahead of you ;) ~Apex1x

You can't tell how deep a puddle is until you step into it.

Since you imply not, I still must ask, any recent changes you're not considering that may affect this?

Have you taken any action(s) to remedy/troubleshoot the situation? (reseat/reinstall the card or cdrw, reseat cable connections)

Suspecting the 3 candidates involved is correct, but from where I sit there might be other things involved.

Thanks for the reply.

It ended up being the cable. I borrowed one from another PC and it worked like a charm. I'm not really sure what happend to the old one, but go figure. Glad it works :)
