It's a nice effect, although I wouldn't use it myself because of the annoying side-effect it has (at least in FF - I've not tested other browsers) of stopping you from being able to select the text of a link.

Dan, I had no problems selecting the text in FF 2.0.0.6

Only thing is, when you paste the selected text you copied, the selection phrase is printed twice.

Hi

Beside what Clive mentioned, the link text may be read twice for the visually impaired visitors. For example Opera's Speak command reads it twice.

Feherke.

Like everything in life, isn't twice better than once? :)

Hi

Well, for example army was more than enough once...

While [tt]blink[/tt] and [tt]marquee[/tt] are in the tops of bad practices, I think this scrollover also has its place there.

Personally I am once more thankful for Doug G's QuickJava extension.

That effect would more likely annoy me than anything else so it would probably end up in my adblock list.

That's funny how people (especially programmers) get so easily annoyed at things that move.
Reminds me of a recent thread ;)

Maybe it's because I didn't ask for them to be moved? As a user, I expect consistency when using my browser (e.g. don't tamper with my back button, don't make a new windows pop up when I didn't ask it to, don't make my links jump and hamper my ability to select text, etc...). When I don't get this consistency, I get annoyed [wink]

I think it's because as web developers, we know what we like, and we know how a browser works. So, when some n00b script kiddy puts a tacky effect on their web page, or tries to change default browser behaviour, or takes control away from us, we really hate it.

While I agree that the blink tag is number one in the bad practices, the marquee effect does serve its purpose in getting multiple pieces of information out there without dedicating lots of space. We see the marquee effect used on news channels like CNN, even tek-tips uses the marquee effect (upper right corner in Whitepapers)

I don't find the scrollover effect annoying. I think it's a nice refreshing way to display links (as long as its not overkill)

Come on, admit it when you were a n00b you tried those tacky effects just cause it was out of the ordinary. All n00b's do this simply because their n00b's. Once they realize that blink is a no-no they'll steer clear away for that effect.
