Scripting windows

I take care of 168 computers all have windows xp pro installed. Every time I want to make a changes. I have to physically goto each machine and do it. Updates forget about takes me a week to get through them. What do you use to make your life easier when working on lab machines? We have security on all computers and I can disable the security remotely, but that is it.
I think I have a need to learn a scripting language I am thinking, but what to start with? Manually working on these machines is getting real old. Ideas???

if they are in a Domain, then use Group Policies for updating and changing things...
