Do they get saved anywhere? A temp folder?
 
no, you normally have to grab the screen shot and paste it into a program of your choosing (it actually saves the screenshot into the clipboard, when you close the pc the contents of the clipboard are lost).

Get ScreenShotCaptor from donationcoder.com (freeware) That'll do the trick nicely.

I've been using SnagIt for about two years and highly recommend it.

The Snipping Tool is cool but I prefer SnagIt. I like being able to include the cursor or to edit/annotate the screenshots.

You can always still use the capture functionality in IrfanView as well. This tool is so useful you shuld already have it anyway.
