Screens go black

I have a Dell Opti Plex GX270 Computer with 3.0 GHz Intel Processor, 1 GB RAM, 128 MB NVIDIA Dual Monitor supported video card running Windows XP Professional SP2. What happens is that after a period of time the displays just go blank. The computer is still on because the Green power light is still on and the lights are on on the keyboard, but I get nothing when moving the mouse or typing on the keyboard. When this happens the computer makes a sound that I can only describe as sounding like a hospital oxygen machine cycling, if that makes any sense. It doesn’t seem to matter what or if any programs are running at the time and it doesn't seem to matter how long the computer has been running, weather it is in safe mode or not. I have remove the video adapter and I am now running video on the on-board display adapter and get the same results. I am unable to run any type of anti-virus or anti-spyware software as the computer goes black before you can run the software.

Any ideas on what the problem could be or what I could try!

First thing I would check is the power options in the control panel. Make sure it is not shutting down the hard drive. Also check the screen saver setup. Hope this helps.

It turns out that their is a known issue with the motherboards on this model of Dell's and they are replacing them through January of 2008. I am getting one sent to me free even though my computer is out of warranty.
