Screen Saver only works when set for 1 minute 2

Windows Me screen savers do not work if set for longer than 1 minute. I have shut down McAfee Virus Clinic and used msconfig to close all programs not essential to machine working. Also tried to reduce graphics acceleration back to lowest levels and tried checking system restore so the check mark shut that off. Still, with system resources at 88%, the computer will not run any screen saver if I set the time to begin longer than 1 minute. At 1 minute it works fine with everything running.

I may be way off, and you have likely tried this, but are the power saving features kicking in before the screen saver comes up? ( is it set at 1 minute also )

turn off screen saver altogether, there a waste of resources and are not required for today's monitors
