Hi there,

I have a compaq presario 2500 and i'm currently replacing the screen.

The screen works fine when just led down on a surface but as soon as i put it anywhere near the hinges or try screwing it in i get this blue maze all over the screen.

Anybody know what causes it?

thanks

Sounds like the ribbon cable is moving around.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

the ribbon cable is securely in place.

i did get it working and put together, wasnt long before the blue patterns appeared again.

i mean the screen works when not screwed in, is it something to do with static in the screen or a poorly made screen?

thanks

Something's probably applying pressure and warping the screen when you screw it down. Look carefully to make sure that nothing is sticking out where it shouldn't be.

i managed to get it sorted for roughly a day, then it wen back to normal.

i think it's either the lcd cable or inverter.

i'd imagine a dodgy lcd cable but what does everyone think?

thanks!

How long have you run it open (without screwing down)? Long enough for the symptoms to appear?

well when it's not screwed down the screen is fine.

when ever i stick the hinges next to eachother the screen gets patterns on it.

it's like the screen is affected by some sort of static.

Are you sure it's not magnatisim causing it?

probably something like that but no idea how to fix it!

I would check all the grounding. Use alligator clip jumpers and connect the hinges and the LCD ground to known good ground. There's a possibility (slim) that your screen gets its ground through the hinges, or there's a ground loop.

Question: Can you assemble the LCD shell completely (without attaching to hinges) and get the screen to work?

Oh right i see, could be yes.

I've never really tried fitting the screen without the hinges on to be honest but it's something to do with the metal on the hinges and the laptop hinges the screen doesnt like as it's fine without it.

Another thought would be to take a DC voltage reading between the laptop ground and the screen ground (screen physically removed from laptop, except for wiring harness). This would indicate if there was a problem with the wiring, letting voltage leak to ground.

I don't have any tools like that though.

I've given her the laptop back as it is, she didnt mind as it was a lot better than before.

I was wondering about lcd cables though, i've seen them on the internet and they have different numbers e.g. C297.

Would it make any difference what model number it is as they're all for compaq presario 2500 with same connectors.

Thanks.

Ya got a finger, don't ya? [wink]

Please, understand, this is entirely mean in pure sarcasm! [smile]

'Course, using those wood screws probably didn't help any.

Laughed out loud on that one...

Reminds me of a past visit to Peru, on the beach where teenagers were testing a car's ignition system...by cranking it and holding on to the ignition wire! YOW!

Well, at least you'll KNOW whether or not it works that way!
[ROFL]

I mean, there'd be no doubting whether it worked or not.

Why, at our church, we had a guy for a while who tested all the 9 volt batteries with his tongue. For sanitary reasons as well as his health, I got us a bonafide battery tester from Radio Shack!

So, gmattey, the lesson learned is:
Never say you don't have the tool for the job. Of course you have a tool you can use! [wink]

This little piggy went to the market..
This little piggy stayed home..
This little piggy went wee wee wee wee wee all the way home (that is, after testing for a wiring problem in his laptop).

And, on a more technical note, a multi-meter is a cheap investment that you will use time and again to test batteries, continuity, and lots of other things. They are cheap, too, I got my wallet-style mini-meter for about $20.

I've got one I got dirt cheap at Radio Shack, myself. My only problem? I ain't got the slightest as to where I put the thing! [LOL]
