Screen goes black

I have a new system with a MSI Geforce 4 128mb 8xagp card. When I launch windows and some apps and games I hear a loud click and then the screen goes black for a second or two and then a click and the screen comes back. Can anyone tell me if this is what is supposed to happen and if not how to stop it?

The program is probably changing the refresh rate and maybe resolution. It's nothing to worry about.
