When I try to play a dvd or .avi (divx) file, after about 10 seconds of playing the screen flickers and then splits in half, with each half playing the same thing. To make matters worse one of the halves' display is awful - full of lines and fuzzy...

ANyone have any ideas? This is not a new machine, or a new card. I think this started happening when I upgraded from 98 to 2k.

What type of video card are you running? You installed the latest Windows 2000 driver for that particular card? Enkrypted

I have a Trident Video Accelerator 3D Image975

That card does not actually have driver support for Windows 2000

<This is what is actually quoted on their website>
Do older Trident products support new operating systems like Win2000, WinME, WinXP, or NT 4.0?

We support a limited number of OS drivers for the 8900, 9000, 9200, 9470, 9420, 9400, 9440, 96x0 (9660, 9680, 9682, 9685), ProVidia 968x, 9750, 9850, 9880, and 9910. Only the operating systems listed on the driver download pages for our products are supported. Cards based on 8900 all the way to the 9850 (listed above) will not support Win2000, WinME, or WinXP.

What type of VGA Adapter is your device manager showing? It must have some default driver shown. You may want to look into getting a different video card. Enkrypted

The default vga driver is vga.dll (does that make sense?).

What video card would you suggest I get?

What will you be mainly using the computer for? Just general use, work-related, any graphical applications?

That will determine the type of card you should look into getting. Enkrypted

Any 32MB video card will work in your system. Here's a few links of different video cards that would work well in your system:

What I was recommending is that the lowest I would go is 32MB. To some people...price does matter. However, if that is not so in your case, here's another link to where you will find all sorts of different video cards at great deals:
