I would like to know a good screen capture software for recording screen video. I know about Fraps but it only works for games, and I need something for regular desktop recording. I have used cam studio, but found it very unstable so I try not to use it unless I have no choice. I just gave snagit a try, and it works well, except seems to only output in .mp4 despite what their site says. Which does not work well in video editors.

Basically I need something to record screen activity that can output in .avi form. Open Source would be nice, but whatever you can name that works well would be very much appreciated. Been banging my head over here trying to convert mp4 to another format, and decided id rather not have to go through that process everytime I record a video.

Also I need it to be compatible with Windows XP up to Windows 8.

Thanks

Actually I mentioned in the post I really did not want to do that every time. Anyway I found something that works well. Camtasia studio.

Thanks though :)

I see you have solved your problem but I would like to point out something that you might have not been familiar with. It is called "Problem Steps Recorder" and has been included in Windows (7 and 8) as part of the operating system for some time now.

As to if it does all you want I'm not sure.

How do I use Problem Steps Recorder?

You can try Audials Tunebite and figure out if it works ok for you to capture and record streaming videos. There's actually some guide on how to use it to record streaming round here:
You should keep in mind that you are supposed to do this just for personal use and only for your own entertainment.

Fraps works for everything: not just games. We've used it for recording setup sequences and errors during integration testing.

I actually tried fraps on some things, but had issues with them. One one, fraps recorded about 1 minute then split everything into a bunch of 32KB avi files, which played back in fast mode. And turned out to only record about 3 minutes if that. It works well on games, but I had issues outside of games. If you have a special setting you use, let me know, and I will give it another try. As I am always up for having more programs.

Camtasia so far has been working well thankfully lol.
