For me, the proper way for changing a NIC is:
1) netconfig to remove the token ring card, relink and shutdown the system
2) physically replace the NIC, reboot the system
3) netconfig to add the LAN adapter and the desired protocols.
Anyway, always have a good backup, just in case...
