I have a SCO OS5.0.5 system installed on a PIII 1.2ghz processor. When I run uname I get the following results:

System = SCO_SV
Node = <nodename>
Release = 3.2v5.0.5
KernelID = 98/07/02
Machine = i80386
BusType = ISA
Serial = XXXXXXXXXX
Users = 30-user
OEM# = 0
Origin# = 1
NumCPU = 1

I have another system that when I run uname I get:

System = SCO_SV
Node = scosysv
Release = 3.2v5.0.6
KernelID = 2000-07-27
Machine = PentIII
BusType = ISA
Serial = XXXXXXXXX
Users = 40-user
OEM# = 0
Origin# = 1
NumCPU = 1

Notice that the first shows machine as i80386 while the second correctly recognizes as PentIII. Is there some thing I need to do on the first system to let it know the machine is a PIII or does that really make any difference. The system that is identified as i80386 does seem to have some performance issues that I believe are all related to disk I/O, but could this be another problem?

Any thoughts appreciated.

No it doesn't make any difference.

5.0.5 was released before there were PIII's so it is defaulting.

What matters is that you have all appropriate patches installed.
