I'm running a brand new SCO 5.0.7 server. All hardware is SCO certified. P4 2.8GHz, 512MB PC2700, dual 36GB 320SCSI HDs, S3 AGP, 52X CD ROM, floppy, Seagate 4/8GB Tape drive, Antec SOHO case & PS.

I'm trying to setup an HP Laserjet 5 printer. My settings show lp3 -d HPLJ5 -o port -n 1. When I check on printer status I get an error message "stopped with printer fault". BIOS has the parallel port set at "ECP" but I have set it as "bi-directional" and "output only" with no success.

I've also changed the printer to lp3 and lp4 with no effect. I tried adding lp0 by upping the PCI parallel ports to 4 from two. I changed back to 2 ports but lp0 still shows up.

I've even removed and reinstalled all of the parallel ports. After doing that I end up with aand error message "Could not print file(s): /tmp/editpra000Br".

The printer works fine with all of our Windows PCs. It is on a manual switch (A & B).

To test direct access to the printer I did the following:
# date> /dev/lp3 (also tried lp4, lp & lp0).
In all cases I received the message "cannot create"

This is my only SCO box. I work on it once every 6 months to a year so SCO & Unix in gereal are not my forte'. Every thing else about this installation is normal and the box works like a champ. This is a unique application server for a medical office so I can't change to a Windows based system.

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance for your help!!! :-D

Have you tried to create a legacy parallel device ?
mkdev parallel
address: 378-37f
interrupt: 7

Hope This Helps, PH.

Thanks! I'll try this later today and post the results.

Your tip worked. For some reason I wasn't thinking of an ISA parallel port which is what the problem was. There were only PCI ports configureed. I'm not sure why I kept thinking the onboard parallel port was PCI. Duh factor I guess.

In any case, thanks again for putting me on the right track.
