SCO OS 5.0.5 disable tty no run level

I have a SCO OpenServer 5.0.5 box which has a problem with the disable/enable tty command- it says "no run level" when I try to disable or enable a tty.
I found information on this link:

which gives a handy gawk script, but when I try to run the script, it says "gawk not found". The link also tells me that the problem is in /etc/wtmp and /etc/utmp, so if I had to, I could delete those and reboot, but that would mean getting 50 people off of the system, so we'd have to schedule a time for that. I'm hoping I don't have to do that.

I've never heard of "gawk". I am however very familiar with something else called "awk", and the scripting appears to be very similar, so I believe there is a typo on the aplawrence page you referenced. Try replacing "gawk" with "awk" in the script.

Gawk must be required for the systime() function.

That must also by why "olded" recommended gnu awk in thread58-543806.
