I have a SCO OpenServer 5.0.5 box which has a problem with the disable/enable tty command- it says "no run level" when I try to disable or enable a tty.
I found information on this link: which gives a handy gawk script, but when I try to run the script, it says "gawk not found". The link also tells me that the problem is in /etc/wtmp and /etc/utmp, so if I had to, I could delete those and reboot, but that would mean getting 50 people off of the system, so we'd have to schedule a time for that. I'm hoping I don't have to do that.

I've never heard of "gawk". I am however very familiar with something else called "awk", and the scripting appears to be very similar, so I believe there is a typo on the aplawrence page you referenced. Try replacing "gawk" with "awk" in the script. :)

Gawk must be required for the systime() function.

That must also by why "olded" recommended gnu awk in thread58-543806.
